ALBANY, N.Y. — The Saint Peter’s Peacocks pulled off the feat of knocking off a conference foe three times in a season, advancing to the second round of the MAAC Basketball Championship with a 71-68 overtime win.
Saint Peter’s moves on to play No. 1 seed Iona at 7 pm on Friday.
Marist heads back to Poughkeepsie with four seniors who have played their last collegiate game.
Saint Peter’s, facing their former coach and a Marist team they had defeated twice this season, kept it tight for 10 minutes. But a solid stretch of defense – and missed second chance opportunities from the Peacocks – led to a run that gave the Red Foxes a lead of as many as 10 in the first half and 13 early in the second half.
But, as Saint Peter’s head coach put it, “[Davauhnte Turner] showed up – finally – and that was the difference in the game.”
He hit a three.
He made a pair of free throws.
Turner made a transition layup; and then Turner poked the ball from freshman guard Darius Hines and went in for another layup.
Two more free throws.
It was an 11-3 personal run against Marist.
“I wasn’t too aggressive [in the first half],” Turner said. “Coaches told me be more aggressive, to get more shots.”
Let’s take a moment and be clear about those last two free throws: It was a 9-1 run, broken by a Brian Parker layup for Marist.
Then the referee put his arms up to signal a technical foul.
“I yelled and one to the player after I scored,” a dejected Brian Parker said after the game. “And they called a technical.”
Turner shot two free throws to take the lead in the game.
The Peacocks led for a chunk of the second half, but missed free throws and a pair of turnovers gave Ryan Funk a chance to get close with a three, and gave Brian Parker a chance to tie with a pair of free throws.
Tied with two minutes to go, both teams traded misses and turnovers to head into overtime.
With under 30 seconds and down by one point, Marist had the ball out of bounds – but with Parker, who had picked up his fifth foul with 41 seconds left in overtime, on the bench.
“I knew they were trying to run something for Funk,” said Holloway after the game. “We wanted to switch everything from 1-5 and they got the ball to [Dozic].”
The Red Foxes, who run their offense through Parker, got a poor shot off in their last chance. That technical foul – and the two points from the free throws – loomed large at the end.
The Peacocks got 18 from Turner and 17 from Dallas Watson. Brian Parker paced Marist with 22, and Ryan Funk added 18.
Saint Peter’s gets ready for top-seeded Iona, who the Peacocks lost to twice this season.
“We’re just getting ready for tomorrow,” Turner said, “watch our last game against them, the mistakes we made, try to get better.”
“It doesn’t matter who we play,” Holloway said. “We came up here on a mission.”
