The University of Texas has retired numerous jerseys in the past. Those jerseys include six football players, three men’s basketball players and countless baseball players. This year, a woman is set to receive the honor for the first time in school history.
Mary Camille Ethridge, the current head coach at Washington State, is receiving the honor of having her number 33 jersey retired. The announcement was made Wednesday afternoon. Ethridge will be honored during halftime of the football game between Texas and LSU.
From 1982-1986, Ethridge, better known as Kamie, was a guard for the Longhorns during those years of prominence. The Longhorns made the NCAA Tournament all four years and Ethridge was the lead playmaker for the team. Notably, she is still the program’s all-time leader in career assist with 776 assists accounted for (assists did not become an official stat until the 1984-1985 season).
Also, while playing for Texas, Kamie Ethridge won The Wade Trophy, the Honda Sports Award, the Honda-Broderick Cup and the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award. These were awards earned by Ethridge as she led Texas to the national championship that year. The Longhorns were the first team to finish the season undefeated that year at 34-0.
Not only was Ethridge a standout in college, she was an excellent player while representing the United States in international play. She was a member of the 1988 Olympic team that won gold in Seoul. Ethridge also has a gold medal while playing in the World University games, the Pan American games, and the FIBA World Championship.
Kamie Ethridge will forever be etched in not only Texas women’s basketball history, she will also be remember in Texas sports history.
