Last week, numerous schools were able land some key commitments with the early signing period approaching. As a direct correlation to that, CBB Today has put together a bit of a recruiting roundup.
First, Ohio State was able to land a commitment from the top-rated player in the state of Ohio. Gabby Hutcherson, a 6-foot-2 forward from Columbus, has chosen to stay home and play for the Buckeyes starting in 2020.
Hutcherson is an athletic stretch-4 who can handle the basketball exceptionally in transition and can rebound well. She is also a mismatch who can penetrate the key and make plays. This comes as Ohio State is closing out its commitments for the 2019 class.
Staying in the Big Ten, Madison Layden has given a verbal commitment to Purdue. The 5-foot-10 guard out of Northwestern High School in Kokomo, Indiana is a strong guard who has some versatility. Layden can rebound the basketball well and can finish well. She can also stretch the defense with her ability to shoot from beyond the arc. This is Purdue’s first commit in the 2020 class.
The Big Ten is not the only conference to start well on the recruiting trail early. Georgia, out of the SEC, is also making its way on the recruiting road. Sarah Ashlee Barker, a 5-foot-9 guard from Spain Park in Alabama, has committed to play for the Bulldogs.
Barker, the daughter of former Alabama quarterback Jay Barker, is a strong guard who can beat defenders off the dribble and can finish well through contact. Barker chose the Bulldogs over Alabama and Auburn.
Boise State was able to collect a commitment from Raigan Reed. The 5-foot-7 guard from Lake Stevens is a crafty playmaker who can finish in traffic. She is also willing passer in transition and can penetrate the key to make plays. She will be an excellent addition for the Broncos.
In addition to Georgia, Mississippi State is the second school from the SEC to receive a commitment. This time, it is coming from Aliyah Matharu of Forestville, Maryland. The 5-foot-10 guard out of Bishop McNamara is an athletic floor leader who can score and is excellent off the dribble.
She is the fourth commitment for the Bulldogs in their 2019 class. Matharu joins Jayla Hemingway, JaMya Young, and Esmery Martinez as 2019 commitments.
Not only did the Big Ten and SEC get commitments, but also, the Pac-12 is receiving some strong talent. Rounding out the list of commitments from last week comes Cailyn Crocker. Crocker has committed to play for Cal. The 5-foot-8 guard is the second commitment in the 2019 class for the Bears. She joins Lauren Fields who also committed to Cal. The Mater Dei High School product has great intangibles as a floor general who is an exceptional shooter.
Teams are beginning to receive more commitments as signing period draws closer. These young players are going to make some colleges and fans excited.
