The winds of change seem to be circling around the Tennessee Lady Volunteers. After a first round exit if the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history, reports are swirling about the job status of head coach Holly Warlick.
Stadium’s Jeff Goodman is reporting that Warlick is out as head coach. Coach Warlick is 172-67 as head coach of Tennessee. The Lady Vols have reached the NCAA Tournament every season under Warlick. This season was arguably the most arduous during her tenure, however.
The Lady Vols finished 19-13 this season. This is the first time since the 1975-76 season where Tennessee failed to win 20 games. During that season, teams only played 27 games.
Unfortunately, this season was marred by numerous blemishes. The Lady Vols were on a six-game losing streak back in January. That matched the longest losing streak in program history. Tennessee also went 7-9 in the SEC this season, finishing eighth in the conference.
Warlick is as known for her tenure as a player at Tennessee. For instance, Warlick was an All-American guard for legendary head coach Pat Summitt. Her number 22 jersey is hanging in the rafters of Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville.
As people are already set on moving on, starting the college coaching carousel, there is more speculation that Louisville head coach Jeff Walz is in line to be the new head coach. Do not expect to hear Walz mentioning any interest about the Tennessee job if the report is true.
“I know all these rumors always get started in March,” stated Walz. “Every single year. It never changed it’s not going to change … So I’m not even going to worry about that. We’re going to continue to focus on the (Louisville) basketball team.”
Holly Warlick was under contract through the 2021-22 season after signing a contract extension a year ago.
“I just think off-the-court stuff, steps need to be taken with our staff and just overall off the court with this team,” Evina Westbrook stated to reporters after the loss to UCLA.
There are numerous candidates that Tennessee can consider in replacing Holly Warlick. The university will, vigorously, begin the search for a new head coach.
