Bruce Pearl has gone from BBQ scandal joke to a guy leading the Auburn Tigers to the Sweet 16 portion of the NCAA Tournament. It’s been a relatively stunning rise from the ashes, if people are to be honest about it.
As for Auburn specifically, it has to be considered a great thing to have Pearl leading the basketball program to these kind of heights. Known as a football school, former Tigers coach Sonny Smith wants it to be known that’s no longer the case.
“He created what Auburn needed: Something to get excited about and a hard ticket to buy,” said former Auburn coach Sonny Smith. “It’s hard to find a ticket. This thing’s sold out for every game.
“And you can’t say it’s a football school now.”
As for Bruce Pearl, when flexing his resume a bit while pretending to be humble, he’s not exactly stunned by how well he’s done since overseeing the Auburn Tigers.
“What does give me confidence is we’ve won championships every place we’ve been,” Bruce Pearl said. “So why shouldn’t I be able to say, ‘This is why we came here and this is what we plan on doing.’ It’s not bragging or being boastful. We’ve won championships every place we’ve been.”
