The Duke Blue Devils were able to sneak by the UCF Knights on Sunday to advance to the Sweet 16. Almost everyone will remember Zion Williamson attacking the rim late, making a shot while drawing a foul from 7-foot-6 UCF big Tacko Fall.
Few will remember he missed the free throw attempt. Maybe only those who are a fan of the Knights will remember the last shot attempt, which circled the rim for what felt like days, before eventually dropping outside the cylinder.
Still, all of those things will be remembered, by varying degrees, by people. What almost no one will remember is that the Duke Blue Devils only played seven guys, with only six of them scoring. Furthermore, the two guys who came off the bench for Duke played a total of 24 minutes.
After the game, Coach K spoke about his team’s current situation in that regard.
“We’re not deep,” Krzyzewski said. “But we are good.”
Blunt. To the point. Accurate.
If the Duke Blue Devils are going to continue to play with a limited bench, Coach K better hope his starters never end up in foul trouble. If nothing else, as the NCAA Tournament continues to unfold, Duke’s lack of depth is something to keep an eye on.
