The St. John’s Red Storm have long relied upon Madison Square Garden as one of the program’s selling points. On Sunday, however, the team used the atmosphere to fuel a huge win over the Villanova Wildcats.
Don’t believe it? Simply ask St. John’s coach Chris Mullin, who echoed those sentiments after the game.
“It was as loud as I can remember, maybe louder,” St. John’s coach Chris Mullin said. “I’m happy for them they got to experience that too. There’s nothing like that. There are some great places to play college basketball, but when you get a full Madison Square Garden against a championship team like Villanova there’s nothing like that. It’s awesome. It helped us. It kept us in the game and took us to another level.”
With the victory, the St. John’s Red Storm improved to 19-7. As importantly, given their non-conference schedule won’t do the team any favors, the Johnnies improved to 7-6 in the Big East Conference.
With the bubble being as bad as it has ever been, if the Johnnies can finish up the season strong, Selection Sunday should be kind to the Red Storm.
