College basketball can sometimes be a cruel mistress. Simply ask Iowa State Cyclones head coach Steve Prohm, who found himself close to defeating the forever defending Big 12 champion Kansas Jayhawks over the weekend.
Things didn’t go exactly as played, though, as the Jayhawks managed to get by a good Cyclones squad by just four points. After the game, Prohm wanted it to be known the loss was on him.
“I thought the biggest adjustment they made was just the physicality they defended us with,” Cyclones coach Steve Prohm said. “That’s on me. This one is on me.”
The loss isn’t a bad one. Also, it has to be noted, the Iowa State Cyclones are a solid team. This is merely a head coach taking accountability rather than deflecting blame on his players (something that has to help build confidence in the locker room).
Despite the loss, Iowa State sits with an overall record of 14-5. Unfortunately, the Cyclones’ Big 12 record is less impressive, as it’s a mediocre 4-3.
Time will tell how Steve Prohm and the Iowa State Cyclones adjust to being so close to defeating Kansas, but falling just a little short.
