Ahead of the Final Four, many coaches are talking about roster construction. Virginia Cavaliers head coach Tony Bennett is no different, though his belief on building a program has been slightly different than others.
While pretty much everyone else at the Final Four is talking about balance, experience and one-and-done players, Bennett admits his approach actually starts with the league his team plays in.
“Our formula has always been … how can you build a program that can compete against the best in your conference?” Virginia coach Tony Bennett said. “And it was to get guys experienced, get them to where they have two or three years where they learn and maybe learn the hard way. And then when they get to be upperclassmen, they’re ready to play the best.”
Obviously, like every other person, Bennett did mention the need for some experience.
With only a few hours left until the Final Four begins, time will tell if Bennett’s building of Virginia was enough to help the Cavaliers reach the national title game.
