Welcome to CBB Today. This place is a college basketball website, founded by a college basketball writer, where college basketball fans will hopefully enjoy the content produced by anyone involved.
In a nutshell, that’s basically it. Hooray, redundancies!
There’s no need to write some flimflam, overly pretentious piece about why and how CBB Today is going to revolutionize the way college basketball is covered — but that’s only because those sort of promises, even if filled with solid intentions, are hogwash wrapped in fancy paper too often used by startup ventures to create a buzz.
If we were to be brutally honest, we’re likely to start off as a flawed endeavor. Imperfect. More misses than hits. An outlet with a mix of veteran and younger talents that will be finding its voice as it goes.
What we will be doing here, however, might be good enough for you to continue to visit.
As it stands now, you’re likely on this page for one of two reasons.
- You know me. For you guys, thanks for all the support over the years. The level of appreciation I have for you fine people knows no bounds.
- Someone who knows me said something nice. After that, you were curious enough to click on a link, directing you here.
Grouping one, you already know the deal. As for the latter, hello. Let me VERY quickly introduce myself, as I’m not exactly a household name.
I’ve been covering college basketball for nearly a decade in various ways for a variety of platforms. SLAMOnline published a longform about Omar Cook well before I was equipped to write such a piece; FanRag Sports (RIP) is where I likely did my best work, including several features on coaches, most of those being lost to the great Internet void; and I’ve had some more journalistic-styled features published by Cox Media and human interest stories for The Open Man.
Boring? Well, how about me shamelessly inserting a tweet from Bomani Jones somewhat giving something I wrote a positive nod?
i didn’t have a problem with k talking to brooks (lying wouldn’t be cool, tho), but this is a good column. https://t.co/92K9gZ1ABW

Are you not yet entertained? Fine. Here’s Dave Zirin doing something similar:

Wait… still not good enough? Bluh. Here’s a picture of my neighbor Adam and a text exchange in which he was in no way coerced to give me an endorsement.
Look at that man. He’s a reliable source on who should be considered good or bad.
I can do these not so humble bragging tweets all day, because validation is FAR too important to me, but let’s spare you guys my consistent attempts of feeling value by way of kindness of others through tweets.
That’s my career in a (hopefully) short summary. Outside of having some of my work published in the 2017 Final Four media guide, there’s not else for me to casually brag about while trying to trick you into becoming a regular visitor of CBB Today.
Then again, you don’t know me or my credentials to begin with. Moreover, I do not want to trick anyone into visiting this website. I — and I apologize for the heavy usage of “I” in this post — would prefer for a communal, let’s have fun together feel for this venture.
Oh yeah. Add a sprinkle of journalism and a forecast of NCAA shenanigans in the mix. Maybe put a down payment of tomfoolery and debacles in this website-stew, as well.
Outside of that, here’s what you should expect in the immediate future.
We will be covering men’s and women’s college basketball. It is important to me that we do both, with an emphasis on equal footing in coverage. Human interest stories will be a staple. Those “moralistic” pieces, where I tend to get on a soap-box to yell at clouds, shall be scribbled. Podcasts will happen here to boot. There will be other stuff, but that’s a decent summary of what to expect.
To be Camp Crystal Lake clear: CBB Today is not reinventing the wheel. We’re going to be yet another cog in the industry, hoping to give you various forms of coverage. That’s it. We’re not going after the establishment, old-guard media, or looking to compete with any of those things or people. We’re not hoping to be an alternative to those things, either. We just want to be another option for you, the reader.
Bluh, bluh and bluh. Insert some self-deprecation and wishing everyone well, and we’re about to hit a my-brand-bingo of sorts.
That’s it. The stuff I say in this introductory post to CBB Today should be the least important things ever written on this website. It is my hope everything from here on out exceeds expectations. That CBB Today becomes a daily destination stop for those who love college basketball, NBA Draft coverage and fun/insightful podcasts.
It’ll be more than that… at least this handsome Internet Scribbler hopes so. While the majority of pieces on this website will certainly rest closer to opinion pieces and conjecture, it’s always been a dream of mine to cover everything with a baseline of factual information.
Sounds silly when you write it out, and likely even more absurd when you read it. Still, without purposely going any form of pretentious, let’s expand on that.
To relay the news to readers in a thorough, thoughtful way. To not be the person making the news, simply the human relaying it in his or her own words. To not purposely dive off the deep end for clicks. To avoid using snark too often — the idiot’s attempt at wit (yes, I see the irony of this phrase) — as some misguided show of power for the sake of the brand.
I will keep everyone posted on whatever CBB Today related updates feel notable at any given time. Other than that, let’s do this thing. Whatever this thing is. Let’s cover college basketball, from the blue-bloods to the small-majors, and have fun while doing so.
