The Wofford Terriers are good. Not good for a mid-major. Not good for a smaller program. Just good relative to any college basketball standard.
On Monday evening, the Terriers defeated the UNC Greensboro Spartans to win the SoCon Tournament, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. After the game, head coach Mike Young wanted the nation to know that his team didn’t need the mid-major label.
“This is a really good basketball team,” Young said. “Don’t give me that mid-major stuff and all that garbage. This is what you see. This is a big, talented team that can score and I cannot wait to play again in that great, great tournament.”
With the victory, the Wofford Terriers improved to an impressive 29-4 on the season, without a single loss while trotting about the SoCon.
It might not sound impressive, but the conference was well beyond solid this season, with plenty advocating for the league to be rewarded with three bids in the Big Dance come Selection Sunday.
Wofford need not worry about it, though. The Terriers are going to hear their names called in just a few days.
